The story

Organic detox herbal tea

Strictly speaking this is not a tea. There is no Camellia sinensis in it, which is exactly the point: it contains no caffeine at all, so it can be drunk at eleven at night without consequence. All our teas, including the white teas, contain some.

The blend leans on warm aromatic spices and roots. Steeped long, it turns golden and thickens slightly, with a rounded sweetness that comes from the ingredients rather than from anything added.

How to make it properly

Herbal blends of this kind are the opposite of a green tea. Use fully boiling water and leave it far longer than you would leave a tea, five to ten minutes, covered. Roots and barks are dense and slow to give up anything, and the usual failure is a weak cup made in three minutes.

A slice of fresh ginger or a strip of lemon peel added to the pot suits it. So does a spoon of honey once it is off the heat.

On the name

Detox is what this style of blend is called in the trade, and we use the name because that is what people look for. We are not going to tell you it detoxifies anything. It is a caffeine-free, warming, pleasant drink for the end of the evening, and that is a good enough reason to keep a tin of it.

What our customers say

  • I came in for one tube of black pepper and left with the three colour set. The staff opened each one so I could smell them before choosing. Nothing was rushed.
