The story
Organic hibiscus flower infusion
Hibiscus is not a tea and does not pretend to be one. There is no Camellia sinensis in the bag, only whole dried flowers of Hibiscus sabdariffa, which means no caffeine at all and a cup that anyone can drink at any hour.
What you notice first is the colour. A few minutes in hot water and the liquor turns a deep, almost inky red that no other infusion in our range produces. The taste follows: frankly tart, closer to cranberry than to a herbal tea, with none of the hay or camomile softness people expect from an infusion.
How to brew it
Fully boiling water, five to ten minutes, covered. Flowers are less dense than roots but they still need time to give up their colour and their acidity. Under-brewed hibiscus is pink and thin; properly brewed it is red and has body.
It takes sweetening better than most infusions because of the acidity. A spoon of honey off the heat, or a little sugar, turns it from bracing into something closer to a fruit drink.
The version that matters here
Iced. Brew at double strength, cool it, pour over a full glass of ice and add a slice of lime. Between March and May this is the most refreshing thing on our shelves, and the colour alone makes it worth serving to guests. Cafés and guesthouses in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh buy the loose 200 g bag for exactly that.
The flowers come from organic farming in Egypt, which is where hibiscus of this grade is grown, and they are packed in Cambodia like the rest of the Infusion d’Asie range.
What our customers say
I came in for one tube of black pepper and left with the three colour set. The staff opened each one so I could smell them before choosing. Nothing was rushed.

Questions
Is hibiscus really caffeine free?
Completely. It contains no tea leaf at all, only dried hibiscus flowers, so there is nothing in it to keep you awake. That is the entire point of the Infusion d’Asie range: all our teas, including the white teas, contain some caffeine.
Why is my hibiscus pale and weak?
Almost always because it was brewed like a green tea. Flowers need fully boiling water and five to ten minutes under a lid, not two minutes at 90 °C. Properly brewed the liquor is deep red and has body. If yours is pink and thin, give it more time rather than more flowers.
Where can I buy it in Cambodia?
In our three shops, in Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Kampot. Take the loose 200 g bag if you drink it iced through the hot season, and the box of eighty tea bags if it is for an office or a guesthouse breakfast. Courier delivery covers a perimeter around each shop.
